Bursitis

Description: Bursitis is the inflammation of the bursa, a small fluid-filled sac that cushions bones, tendons, and muscles around joints. This synovial fluid allows structures to glide smoothly over each other, reducing friction and wear. Bursitis can occur in any bursa in the body, but it is most common in areas such as the shoulders, elbows, hips, and knees. Typical symptoms include pain, swelling, stiffness, and, in some cases, limited movement in the affected joint. Bursitis can be caused by a variety of factors, including injury, overuse, infections, or underlying medical conditions such as arthritis. While it can affect people of all ages, it is more prevalent in those who engage in repetitive activities or have a sedentary lifestyle. Diagnosis is usually made through a physical examination, and imaging studies may be required to assess the extent of inflammation. Treatment may include rest, ice, anti-inflammatory medications, and, in more severe cases, corticosteroid injections or surgery. Preventing bursitis involves maintaining good physical fitness, avoiding repetitive movements, and performing appropriate stretching and strengthening exercises.
