Endocarditis can affect individuals with pre-existing heart problems, such as damaged or artificial heart valves, but it can also occur in healthy individuals. Symptoms include fever, chills, night sweats, fatigue, and in some cases, skin spots or nail hemorrhages may appear. If left untreated, endocarditis can lead to serious complications, such as damage to heart valves, embolisms, and in extreme cases, death. Diagnosis is made through echocardiograms, blood tests, and other studies. Treatment typically involves intravenous antibiotics for an extended period, and in some cases, surgery may be necessary to repair or replace affected valves. Prevention is crucial, especially in high-risk individuals, and may include prophylactic antibiotics before certain medical procedures.
