Hypervisor Type

Description: Hypervisors are a fundamental technology in virtualization, allowing the creation and management of virtual machines (VMs) in a computing environment. They are primarily classified into two types based on their architecture: Type 1 and Type 2. A Type 1 hypervisor, also known as ‘bare-metal’, runs directly on the server hardware, allowing it to provide superior performance and better resource utilization. Examples of Type 1 hypervisors include VMware ESXi, Microsoft Hyper-V, and Xen. On the other hand, a Type 2 hypervisor, or ‘hosted’, runs on top of a conventional operating system, which can introduce an additional layer of latency and dependency on the underlying operating system’s resources. Examples of Type 2 hypervisors include Oracle VirtualBox and VMware Workstation. The choice between a Type 1 and Type 2 hypervisor depends on the specific performance, scalability, and resource management needs of each organization. Both types of hypervisors are essential in cloud infrastructure and in the implementation of containers, facilitating the creation of isolated environments for applications and services, which enhances efficiency and flexibility in software development and deployment.
