Passive Check

Description: Passive checks in monitoring systems are a method that allows system administrators to receive information about the status of network services and devices through an external program. Unlike active checks, which are initiated directly by the monitoring system, passive checks rely on receiving status data sent by other programs or scripts. This means that instead of the monitoring system performing the query, an agent or external script is responsible for checking the status of a service and then reporting the results back to the monitoring system. This methodology is particularly useful in situations where active monitoring may not be feasible, such as in environments with limited resources or in systems that do not allow direct connections. Passive checks can also be used to integrate different monitoring systems or management tools, thus facilitating a more comprehensive view of the IT infrastructure’s status. The flexibility offered by passive checks allows administrators to customize and adapt monitoring to the specific needs of their environment, ensuring effective control over critical services.
