Revocation Status

Description: The revocation status refers to the current condition of a digital certificate in relation to its validity and use. In the context of Public Key Infrastructure (PKI), a digital certificate can be revoked for various reasons, such as the loss of the associated private key, suspicion of compromise of the holder’s identity, or the termination of the contractual relationship that justifies its issuance. This status is crucial for ensuring security and trust in digital communications, as a revoked certificate should not be accepted as valid. To manage revocation status, Certificate Revocation Lists (CRLs) and protocols like the Online Certificate Status Protocol (OCSP) are used, allowing systems to verify in real-time whether a certificate is still valid or has been revoked. Proper management of revocation status is essential to prevent fraud and cyberattacks, ensuring that only valid certificates are used in electronic transactions and secure communications.
