Xenocentrism

Description: Xenocentrism is the belief that another culture is superior to one’s own, which can influence the perception and valuation of the practices, values, and products of different societies. This perspective can lead to bias in the development and implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) systems, as designers and developers may unconsciously favor characteristics of external cultures to the detriment of local ones. Xenocentrism can manifest in how data is collected and analyzed, as well as in how AI algorithms are trained. If not recognized and addressed, this bias can result in systems that do not adequately reflect cultural diversity and that perpetuate inequalities. In the context of AI, it is crucial for developers to be aware of their own cultural perceptions and how these may influence the technology they create. Ethics in AI demands an inclusive approach that values all cultures equally, avoiding the tendency to idealize or overvalue the practices of other societies compared to one’s own.
